Celebrating code-based art and generative systems. A visual identity that embodies both mathematical elegance and creative unpredictability.

The Algorithmic Patterns in the Creative Arts (ALPACA) festival was conceived as a bold intersection of computational theory and artistic exploration. Funded as part of the UK Research and Innovation Future Leader Fellowship, the festival is made up of over 40 artists exploring pattern-based music, arts and crafts through three days of concert and club performances, talks and workshops.

As a celebration of generative systems, code-based art, and algorithmic aesthetics, the festival demanded a visual identity that could embody both mathematical elegance and creative unpredictability.

The branding system developed for ALPACA drew its primary inspiration from Truchet tilings, a mathematical pattern system that has long fascinated artists and scientists for its ability to produce infinite variation from a small set of rules. This system was particularly resonant for ALPACA’s identity as it reflected the duality inherent in generative art: structured logic giving rise to emergent beauty.

The visual system was deployed across a variety of touchpoints: print, motion graphics, social media templates, and even wearable merchandise. Each iteration felt cohesive yet unique, thanks to the adaptive pattern engine rooted in Truchet logic.

An ever-evolving identity system that echoes the generative nature of the works it represents.
